On the horizon of high school graduation, Chisato (Akari Takaishi) and Mahilo (Saori Izawa) are ordered by the organization for which they work to live together and integrate into society. In this buddy-comedy, these young ladies exist on opposite ends of the spectrum, resulting in quirky interactions while only having one thing in common: being professional assassins. While searching for cover jobs, Chisato finds herself a target of the Yakuza, leading her and Mahilo to finally find the perfect bonding activity. Armed with a machine gun, naivety, and snappy dialogue, this unlikely pair will take down the Yakuza and make it home in time for cake.
This is a ridiculous movie in all the best ways, with no concern about taking itself seriously. Lead by its quirky lead characters, the film’s approach lends itself to feeling equally split between the personalities of the extroverted and bubbly Chisato and the introverted sociopathy of Mahilo. Taking an opposites attract approach, these two play off each other in an innocently entertaining way, while strewn across a backdrop of dead victims. Whether they are at home sharing witty banter about their unfavorable accommodations or awkwardly auditioning for jobs at a Maid Cafe, it is easy to mistake this for a simple coming-of-age story. However, the action scenes more than make up for that misconception, gifting the girls with video game-like expert skills and unlimited lives.
It is wildly violent, but never too gratuitous, and offers just as much hand-to-hand combat as it does guns fired, continuing its balancing act of opposites. During the moments when all the film’s unique ingredients begin to blend together, Baby Assassins will hit you in the face with bloody endearment. This little slice of life from the growing pains of young assassins is a real treat for those looking for mindless, yet heartfelt, fun. There is a surprising amount of depth that makes these characters entirely endearing and will, hopefully, propel its young cast to great future opportunities.
