Statue Spotlight: Sideshow Con 2021

Perhaps it was because Sideshow released a few new pieces for pre-order prior to the actual Sideshow Con Event (i.e., Storm PF, Galactus Maquette, Scarlet Witch PF, Hulk vs Hulkbuster Maquette). Perhaps it is because the other companies attending just brought a more fresh creative direction this year. Or perhaps, maybe what people are saying is true: Sideshow is becoming more concerned with distributing collectibles as opposed to developing them. Regardless of the reason, Sideshow Con 2021 brought a wave of disappointment with their newest releases and updates, especially for not being a new collector. Sideshow Con was great for new collectors or soon to be collectors, as they made sure to load the event with rehashes of characters, including a reveal that was given the Premium Format treatment just a year and a half ago.

Before diving into the statues themselves, a little on the event as a whole. I thought that Sideshow made some good improvements being one year removed from their initial self-run Con event. Most notably of those was spreading out new reveals throughout the week, as well as identifying what properties the various booth configurations would highlight. That helped the event feel more focused and gave us something to look forward to throughout the week. There were still some technical issues with stream quality, not as bad as last year, and various other expected hiccups of doing live streams that I think furthered the recommendation for more pre-taped material. I actually caught a few of their non-booth tour live streams, something I did very little of last year, and played in some of their point-laden trivia games. While I was one of those who initially had a sour taste following the changes made to the point system (adding expiration dates and changing distribution method), it makes a lot of sense from a company standpoint to do it the new way. Yes, the quick $40-60 in rewards every event added up nicely, but in the grand scheme of things, I was still able to grab $30+ with much less effort than stressing over expiring point codes.

As an event, Sideshow has moved Sideshow Con forward towards being a more well-rounded happening, but in terms of its statues, Sideshow has decided to work backwards. Other than one statue, one out of twelve revealed 1:4 pieces, all of Sideshow's announced pieces are re-do's of characters. Not just that, but many of them had only been released within the last 5 years. It felt like watching a replay of year's past, with little to really get excited about regarding Sideshow's prospects for future pieces. In all honesty, I think the pre-Con pre-orders that were also on display throughout the Con were superior as an overall collection when compared to the batch of new reveals. Speaking of which, there is plenty to say about Sideshow's new reveals, but I offer just a quick snippet of my thoughts below. I also included PCS's new reveals since it had the second largest presence at the Con and also debuted probably two of the three best new statues.

Sure, this year's Sideshow Con was better than last years, but it should be easy to admit that the bar was set pretty low. My problem and disappointment stems from the lack of progression the company took overall. There wre some highlights and a handful of new things, but Sideshow continues to feel behind the ball in terms of expanding past their comfort zone of usual characters. Even worse, this year has that comfort zone feeling like it has a 3 year lifespan before its time to start over again.

SIDESHOW COLLECTIBLES

Carnage Premium Format

Statue Rating: 4.5/5

Excitement Rating: 4.5/5

This is how you re-release a character within 5 years of the last statue and make it worth the repeat. I know that Daniel Bel's sculpts are typically held in very high regard, and while I have never seen a piece of his I did not like, I had not been wowed as much as this Carnage has wowed me. The flow captured in the symbiote, the lethality in his scythe arm, and the overall sense of living danger the statue exudes is brilliant. If not for a few nitpicks I have with it, I could easily say this is the best Carnage I have ever seen. Unfortunately, the narrowness of his mouth comes off like too much like a beak and he has a bit of a hunchback. Even with those issues, I may end up grabbing this statue down the line to pair with my Prime 1 Venom.

Venom PF

Statue Rating: 3.5/5

Excitement Rating: 2/5

I do not care much for this design and take on the Venom character. I am ok with the size, the emblem, the movement captured in the symbiote coming out of the sewage, and him holding Spider-Man's mask. I don't really hate the pose either, don't love it, but don't hate it. I do not like the headsculpt in the slightest and I think everything about the base can get tossed. This whole paint effect emulating the glow of reflections is missing more than it hits. THE stand out feature in this piece is the sculpt of the symbiote and how in certain areas (look at its thigh) it looks like its actively rippling and moving. It is better than their last Premium Format in most ways, so it is an upgrade, but I wouldn't say enough of one to warrant this taking the release of a yet to be seen Spidey character from Sideshow.

Captain America Premium Format Figure

Statue Rating: 2.5/5

Excitement Rating: 1/5

Another repeat of a character made in recent years and it is just ok. The dyanmicism and design of the suit capture that classic Captain America feel well, but the sculpt is too overdone in the upper body. I mean, his forearms looks bigger than his head and is not a style choice I can get behind, "comic accurate" or not. The base fits the character well but the effects of the ricocheting bullets looks like something that would accompany a plastic toy. I like Cap, but there is just very little excitement here. Try harder Sideshow.

Black Widow Premium Format

Statue Rating: 2/5

Excitement Rating: 1/5

A lot of what I said about the Captain America PF can be echoed here. I am usually first to defend Sideshow as the best face sculpts in the game, especially when it comes to females. This one looks like a step back in the department, though I do like how they sculpted the twirling of her hair. The pose and the action it captures are the highlight for the statue, but do not outweigh what works against this piece. The fact that there was a recent Black Widow PF, that it had a better designed costume and headsculpt, and that it was devoid of plastic energy effects almost squashes this as even serviceable. I get maybe wanting to capitalize on the "Black Widow"movie, but do a movie version for that and don't just pop out another comic version. No thanks.

Doctor Doom Maquette

Statue Rating: 4/5

Excitement Rating: 4/5

When this was first shown in full, it had the most unflattering lighting being thrown at it and the greens back out like an olive-brown. This left a tasteless first impression in most collector's mouths, but now that it has gotten proper exposure, it continues to really grow on me. The pose captures Doom's obnoxious regality and egoism so well and the Latverian flags were a unique touch for a character that has seen A LOT of renditions. Besides having a sculpted cape, I do wish there were a few more modern touches in his design and that they knocked off an inch or so from the flag pole. I can appreciate the subtle texture in his costume but, overall, it does not hit enough on a style I would purchase. The EX is pretty weak as well, with not enough variation between the two masks to make much of a difference. Even with all of that, this is still a stand out statue.

The Crow Premium Format

Statue Rating: 4.5/5

Excitement Rating: 3/5

I am not a big "The Crow" fan or anything, so this does not resonate with me in a way that I can really provide ideas of alternatives/changes I would make. Even so, this was a breath of fresh air to see on the Con floor: something new and looking really good. The concept and design are top notch, with his walking motion and a shotgun thrown over his shoulder and a crow on the other. The textures are realistic and, based on pictures, this is a really good likeness. My only concern is very nitpicky, but the feathers on the crow's neck and the size/length of its beak more closely resemble that of a raven. The neck feathers need to be sculpted smoothly against its body and the beak a bit smaller. This was an absolute winner of a reveal.

Huntress Premium Format

Statue Rating: 4/5

Excitement Rating: 3/5

Ok, I will be the first to admit that this is a CLEAN looking statue. Beautiful face, cool pose, and a balanced mix of classic costume with modern textures. Her color scheme is a natural standout amongst the many neutrals in the comic world. But again, a Huntress was just shipped out at the turn of 2017/2018. There was no other characters? Really? REALLY? At least it is a really nice looking nice and, hopefully, it won't come with the color bleeding issue the previous version had with its cape.

Batman Premium Format

Statue Rating: 2.5/5

Excitement Rating: 0/5

Christian Bale is my favorite Batman, but not only has there already been another Batman, but an ever newer Batman will be hitting the screen next year. This movie came out 16 years ago, get with the damn times and stop trying to catch up on shit. You have plenty of Batman statues out in the ethos right now. Get the fuck out of here with this.

Rey Premium Format

Statue Rating: 3/5

Excitement Rating: 3/5

Neither this nor the Kylo Ren below had seen Premium Format releases since their "The Force Awakens" renditions, so I will give Sideshow props for skipping a movie before doing another release (though, the general reception to "The Last Jedi" may have not left them much of a choice). I not only like the new Star Wars movies, but I really like Rey as a character. There is definitely something about the headsculpt that I am not feeling, perhaps its the expression, but something is slightly off. I really like that costume and how well the different layers look, but it does not doa good job of being a stand-alone piece and will need the Kylo Ren companion to really hit its stride in a collection.

Kylo Ren Premium Format

Statue Rating: 3.5/5

Excitement Rating: 3/5

I find the headsculpt to be quite remarkable here, as I think it absoultely conveys the emotions of this scene as though I am watching the movie. The water effects on the base are well done and I like how unstable his lightsaber looks. It provides a good contrast to the cleaner appearance of Rey's saber. The swap-out helmeted portrait is a simple and effective alternative if you don't necessarily care to see the actor's likeness. I think it is a bit of a shame that his costume was so boring, because it is hard to find the stand-out aspect of this statue.

Batgirl Premium Format

Statue Rating: 3/5

Excitement Rating: 2/5

I have absolutely never liked this pose, mostly because it causes such an awkward looking mid-section. Nevertheless, I think this is the superior color scheme to the classic version that was released with the grey/black/yellow. The black and gold comes off so clean and will really stand out amongst a slew of Batman statues. But, it comes at the expense of the shitty practice of releasing variants after collectors are likely to have already committed to the original version. Variants should come with transparency and be revealed at the same time, even if not put up for order simultaneously. I am happy for those who prefer this color scheme and were able to pick this up before it quickly went to waitlist.

Catwoman Premium Format

Statue Rating: 2.5/5

Excitement Rating: 0/5

I can not begin to express my frustration for DC collectors, particularly those fond of Batman characters. Not only did a recent Catwoman PF just get released in 2019, but the Collector's Edition is still in stock. This is just way too soon and a waste of a release spot that could have been filled by countless DC characters that are far more deserving. Beyond that, I get that the modern Catwoman just released was not for everyone, but, thus far, this just looks fine. If you are going to release near back-to-back statues of the same character, at least justify it by wowing collectors. I guess they just needed a place to put the extra paint they had for the new Black Widow suit.

PREMIUM COLLECTIBLES STUDIO (PCS)

The Last Ronin

Statue Rating: 4.75/5

Excitement Rating: 4/5

Holy hell, this is damn near perfect. What I appreciate most about this statue is PCS creating it while the story is currently relevant and ongoing, rather than waiting for years after its release. With the final turtle living in his Ronin-garb and the weapons of all of his brothers, he is watched over by his fallen brethren, which is an aspect that appears in the comic. This is such a well-polished representation, from the sculpt, design, but most especially the paint. Even zooming in to his hand holding the baton, i can clearly see the separation between his inner hand and the item, which is something that I have seen done much much poorly with a sculpt of glob usually merging the hand and item. This had to be the underspoken star of the Con. When this was revealed on the livestream I was yelling at the screen while the hosts spoiled who the final Turtle was as they talked about the statue.

Pumpkinhead

Statue Rating: 4.5/5

Excitement Rating: 4.5/5

I love horror and I love a company giving a horror statue its due diligence. This Pupkinhead is a fucking tremendous work of sculpting heaven from head to claw. The way Franco Carlesimo captured all the wrinkles and tightness in the skin which further exaggerates the underlying veins portruding through. There is not a speck on this statue where you will find a shortcut or laziness, at least on the creature itself. I think the base it what pulls this statue back from reaching the highest pinnacle, as the greenery has a more cartoon/animated style and feel that does not mesh well with the hyper-realistic Pumpkinhead.

Grimlock Transformers Statue

Statue Rating: 4/5

Excitement Rating: 4/5

If there was a concept award, this would have surely run away with it. Not a huge Transformers fan, nor do I care anything about this character, but to try and capture the transofmring nature in a single piece is truly innovative. You typially see a Tranformer's statue as either its vehicle or robot form, with the former usually serviing as a proximity addition. But here, PCS creatively included a clear resin structure of the mid-transformation between Grimlock's two forms. I am not as excited for this statue in particular, but moreso how this concept can be pulled into statues of more prominent Tranformers and maybe even other IPs. Bravo for taking a chance on something different.

Macho Man Randy Savage

Statue Rating: 3.5/5

Excitement Rating: 2/5

I saw the reference image for this pose and outfit,,,PCS really nailed their source material. They made the necessary tweaks to have their statue look a bit less awkward in his pose, but I am not sold on this source material being the key to a Macho Man statue. The man had some crazy outfits back in the day and, instead, they chose a more tame version of him for a premium collectible. The statue would benefit from either a little extra pizazz, or as others have mentioned, an optional championship belt to have his left hand position make more sense. The sculptor nailed Savage's physique and body sculpt and this is still a solid statue, but Undertaker had his coat/hat, Flair had his robe, Austin had his vest, and Macho Man needed his cowboy hat and tassels.

Hulk Hogan

Statue Rating: 3/5

Excitement Rating: 2/5

Even with its deficits, I think the Macho Man statue stand high above this rendition of the Hulkster. I can not put my finger on it, but even in video of the statue, there is something off about his face in the eye area. Also, I don't think his arms are big enough, the man had 24" pythons, not 18" garden snakes!! It is fine, there is not much else to critique, especially when it is classified as the "Classic Version". But with that in mind, I would, without hesitation, wait for another version, hopefully with boas.
